Another year, another SketchUp! While SketchUp 2019 isn’t necessarily packed full of features, the ones we get do pack a punch. This release unlocks more capabilities for “The SketchUp Workflow for Architecture” and our ConDoc Tools extension. Below are some new features, leading of with the ones that significantly impact our workflow…

SketchUp 2019 isn’t necessarily packed full of features, but the ones we get do pack a punch. This release adds more capabilities to “The SketchUp Workflow for Architecture” and our ConDoc Tools extension. Below are my favorite new features…
Dashed lines are now available in SketchUp! This new layer property is controlled in several different places, and is NOT intuitive. Check out my tips for using the new dashed lines feature below.
- The dashed line type is a property of a layer, controlled in the Layers dialog in SketchUp.
- The visibility of dashes is controlled through the edge properties of a style. If dashes are disabled in the active style, all lines will show as solid (just like previous versions of SketchUp)
- When nesting layers, the deepest nested layer’s line type overrides all others.

Because of this, I suggest only using this feature for simple dashed lines, like hidden lines. Other line types are almost always better drafted in LayOut, or as a 2Dgraphic using the “dashed lines” extension. If you like the easy button, the new ConDoc 4.5 release includes updated drawing sets that fully utilize this feature, swapping out our old raster style with crisp vector dashes!

LayOut’s scaled drawing feature paired with the new CAD export for SketchUp opens up a brand new 2D to 3D workflow. You can now quickly draft 2D ideas in LayOut, then move them back to SketchUp for further refinement in 3D. The new ConDoc 4.5 annotation scrapbook now includes symbols of furniture, fixtures, windows, and doors; everything you need to get the most out of this new feature!
The “New from Template” command makes it easy to choose a different template for each project. Click on the heart to set your favorite template, this brings back much needed template control without having to dig into the Preferences dialog.
You can now jump into SketchUp Pro for only $299/year on a new subscription plan. Personally, I love subscriptions because they keep me on the latest and greatest version of the software, at low predictable payments, and provide flexibility for my team that is always expanding and contracting. Don’t worry, if you disagree you can still buy a classic license. Just remember, you need to pay $120/year to upgrade to the latest version (sounds a lot like a subscription to me).
Get where you need to go faster in LayOut. New for LayOut 2019, within the preferences dialog you can dial up the speed of your zoom. Remember, your cursor is the focal point of navigation. Put your cursor on the area you want to zoom to, then roll the scroll-wheel forward.
This one is new so I will mention it, but is definitely not a new feature that makes me jump out of bed in the morning to start modeling. The Tape Measure tool now reports length of selected edges, area of faces, and coordinates of midpoints and intersections straight from an inference tip. Just activate the Tape Measure tool and hover on an edge or surface. Uhhhh-mazing?
See the whole list of new features in SketchUp 2019 at https://blog.sketchup.com/article/a-whole-new-way-to-sketchup. This new versions is well worth it to stay on the cutting edge of 3D technology.
